Bishop John O. Mason
John O. Mason was born June 27, 1906 in Athens, Alabama. He came to Chicago just before the Great Depression to attend Worsham Mortuary School. After graduation in 1931, he returned to Alabama and opened Mason’s Funeral Home, and also established People’s Burial Insurance Company. He returned to the windy city around 1935 and began attending Elder Cain Scott’s church in Morgan Park. Brother John O. Mason called upon to serve not only the State, but the national work as well. On behalf of Senior Bishop Mason, Bishop Bailey appointed Assistant Overseer John O.Mason as the third Bishop of Northern Illinois on August 15, 1955.In August 1969, Bishop John O. Mason and Northern Illinois held its 50th Golden Jubilee Convocation. In 1976, Northern Illinois joined the nation in celebrating the bicentennial year, with a festive convocation adorned with the Red, White and Blue. Bishop John O. Mason retired as bishop on December 1, 1979.
